It starts with the compressor, which takes up about 95% of the power your air conditioner consumes. When electricity enters the unit, it passes through a rectifier to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). As direct current passes through a frequency driver, it applies power to the motor and therefore determines output. DC power is more efficient, which is why it is often used in high-efficiency AC-powered heat pumps and air conditioners.
Coles Refrigeration & Air Conditioning is offering three types of solar-powered air conditioners: off-grid, hybrid, and RV.
Our off-grid air conditioning systems combine the power of the sun with the reliability of battery storage.
With a 48V DC inverter, these systems do not need to rely on electricity – which means you get to reduce energy costs by up to 100% day and night.
Our off-grid solar air conditioners are ideal for applications with minimal or limited power conditions. These include remote telecom stations, container houses, motor homes, island locations, load shedding places, and boats and yachts.
The AC-powered air conditioner runs on solar power that is converted twice in an off-grid solar setup. First, the native DC power from solar panels is converted to AC.
Then, the power is immediately converted back to DC once it enters the air conditioning unit. This traditional configuration often requires more solar panels and more batteries.
What makes the off-grid system unique is that our DC powered units skip all of these conversions. DC power is directly applied to the air conditioning unit without conversion loss, which means no power is wasted.

Hybrid AC-DC solar air conditioners are designed to keep your home cool all day with almost zero energy costs. Solar panels will supply power directly to the fan motors and compressor while the sun is shining. When it turns dark and solar power becomes insufficient, the system will automatically switch to grid power.
Hybrid solar air conditioners do not need batteries and require only a few PV panels to meet your cooling needs. During a scorching day, you can operate your air conditioner on 100% solar power – achieving efficiency above SEER 35 when using four 300W solar panels. At night, you can continue saving on energy costs with our SEER 21 rated ultrahigh efficiency heat pumps.
All our solar air conditioners feature mini-split design, which allows you to install them in areas where cooling is needed the most.
Coles is taking inverter technology to a new level of efficiency by introducing a true solar hybrid air conditioner that converts sunlight into DC power and feeds it directly to the compressor. By combining solar hybrid technology with variable DC compressor, our solar systems offer the benefits of precision temperature control, low noise, and improved energy efficiency.
Coles adopts a DC control module that allows you to use DC-generated solar power or AC-generated mains power or even a combination of both. This means that no matter the weather, you can enjoy uninterrupted cooling comfort.
By replacing AC power from the mains with the equivalent amount of power in solar energy, you can save up to 97% of your mains power consumption.
Like all DC inverter air conditioners, the Coles solar hybrid runs on DC power that is converted from the mains. However, our systems do not require an expensive inverter or controller to do this. Solar DC power directly replaces the mains power – effectively reducing your daytime air conditioning costs by a whopping 97 per cent!
